On 27th June 2013, Land Force Western Area was re-designated 3rd Canadian Division.  The Division retains the formations and units of Western Area with 1 Area Support Group becoming 3rd Canadian Division Support Group and Western Area Training Centre becoming 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. 

3rd Canadian Division is one of four operational commands of the Canadian Army.  This command is responsible for all Canadian Army administration and operations in western Canada from the Pacific Ocean to Thunder Bay, Ontario and is headquartered at 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton, Alberta.

Under the 3 Cdn Div command are approximately 5,400 Regular Force soldiers, 4,800 Reserve Force soldiers, 1,400 DND civilian employees, and 900 Canadian Rangers.

3rd Canadian Division comprises one Regular Force Mechanized Brigade Group, three Reserve Force Brigade Groups, one Division Support Group, one Division Training Centre, a Canadian Ranger Patrol Group, an Intelligence Company and a Military Police Regiment:

Wainwright, Alberta — Approximately 5,500 military personnel participated in Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE 2018 (Ex MR 18), which focused on validating three Level 6 headquarters from 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (5 CMBG) from 13 to 24 May at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta.
