Chief Warrant Officer James Smith enrolled in the Canadian Forces 25 May 1990, as an infantry soldier with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in Halifax, NS. After completion of basic training in Cornwallis, NS and basic infantry training in Wainwright, AB, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry, at Kapyong Barracks in Winnipeg, MB.

During his 31 years of service, he has served at all rank levels with 2 PPCLI. In addition to his regimental employment, his postings include: 2nd Language training at 17 Wing, Winnipeg; Canadian Forces leadership and Recruit School; Joint Task Force 2; Chief of Force Development; Director General Military Careers; Canadian Combat Support Brigade and 5th Canadian Division. His employment includes: Rifleman; Section Commander; Platoon Instructor; Unit Training Warrant Officer; Company Sergeant Major; Strategic Analyst of Structures Integration; PPCLI Career Manager; Regimental Sergeant Major; CCSB’s first Brigade Sergeant Major and 5th Division Sergeant Major.

CWO Smith has six operational deployments overseas. His deployments to the Balkans include Croatia (1993) and Bosnia (1997, 2000 and 2003). He deployed to Afghanistan (2009) with Task Force 3-09 and the Ukraine (2017) as Task Force Sergeant Major Roto 2.

CWO Smith is invested as member of the Order of Military Merit. He is married and the father of four adult children.

Chief Warrant Officer Smith was appointed Canadian Army Sergeant Major on June 10, 2021.
